English Heritage
Unlike the National Trust, English Heritage is not completely independent of government. English Heritage is an executive non-departmental public body sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport with its responsibilities set out in the National Heritage Act. Whilst most of their funding comes from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, English Heritage are also reliant on donations and revenue from commercial activities.
English Heritage offer hundreds of family days out from impressive castles and imposing palaces, beautiful houses and gardens to ancient monuments and Roman sites. They also throw open their doors for free on their Heritage Open Days, several days in September where you can visit building of every age, style and function and it won't cost you a penny. Heritage Open Days don't include English Heritage's own collection of historic properties but as an English Heritage member these properties are free to enter all year round.
Joining English Heritage costs from as little as £33.50 (aged 60+) and gives you FREE entry to over 400 castles, stately homes, ruins and more.
